Casino bonus math: wagering, max bet and expected value, worked out
Turnover equals multiple times base, cost equals turnover times house edge. The five levers of a bonus worked through with real terms (Bovada 25x and 50x on deposit plus bonus, Rainbet's $50 cap) and the UK regulator's 10x ceiling for comparison.

A casino bonus is a loan of play money with a toll attached, and the toll is computable. Five terms decide what it costs you: the wagering multiple, whether that multiple applies to the bonus alone or to deposit plus bonus, which games count and at what rate, the maximum bet and expiry that set your pace, and the maximum cashout that caps the upside. This guide works through each lever with the arithmetic shown, using offers whose terms I have read on the operator’s own pages, and ends with the regulator’s view of what a fair multiple looks like. The wagering calculator runs the same numbers for any offer you paste in.
The quantity that matters: required turnover
Everything starts with one number, the total amount you must bet before bonus money becomes withdrawable. Operators write it as a multiple, and the base it multiplies is the first thing to check.
- Multiple on bonus only. Deposit $100, get $100, 35x on the bonus: turnover = 35 × $100 = $3,500.
- Multiple on deposit plus bonus. Same offer, 35x on deposit plus bonus: turnover = 35 × $200 = $7,000. Twice the toll for the same headline.
Real examples from the terms: Bovada’s crypto casino welcome bonus is a 125% match up to $1,250 with 25x on deposit plus bonus, and the codes for the second and third deposits carry 50x on deposit plus bonus. Shuffle’s welcome offer, as reported by BitDegree, is 100% up to $1,000 at 35x on deposit plus bonus with a $20 minimum deposit. A $1,000 Bovada deposit therefore commits you to 25 × ($1,000 + $1,250) = $56,250 of bets. A $100 Shuffle deposit commits you to 35 × $200 = $7,000.
The expected cost: turnover times house edge
House edge is the ratio of the average loss to the initial bet. Multiply it by the required turnover and you have the expected cost of clearing the bonus. The simplified expected value used across the industry is bonus minus that cost, and it is a good first approximation when the maximum cashout is not binding.
| Offer (terms as read) | Deposit | Bonus | Turnover | Cost at 2% edge | Cost at 4% | Cost at 8% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bovada 125% up to $1,250, 25x (D+B) | $1,000 | $1,250 | $56,250 | $1,125 (EV +$125) | $2,250 (EV −$1,000) | $4,500 (EV −$3,250) |
| Shuffle 100% up to $1,000, 35x (D+B), per BitDegree | $100 | $100 | $7,000 | $140 (EV −$40) | $280 (EV −$180) | $560 (EV −$460) |
| Generic 100% match, 30x on bonus | $100 | $100 | $3,000 | $60 (EV +$40) | $120 (EV −$20) | $240 (EV −$140) |
The edge column is the whole argument. Slots sit anywhere between 2% and 15% per the Wizard of Odds table; most of the ones casinos push for bonus play are at the 4% to 6% end. Liberal-rules blackjack runs 0.28% and baccarat banker 1.06%, which is exactly why those games are excluded or weighted down in the next lever. A quicker way to see the same thing is the break-even return: 1 minus bonus over turnover. For the Shuffle example that is 1 − 100/7,000 = 98.57%, a return very few slots pay; for the Bovada example it is 1 − 1,250/56,250 = 97.78%. If the games you are allowed to play return less than that, the bonus is a cost, not a gift.
Game contribution: the edge you are allowed to use
Bonus terms route you toward high-edge games. Bovada’s crypto casino bonus excludes live dealer games and counts craps at 0%; its crypto sports bonus can be used in the casino at a 30x requirement while the sportsbook requirement is 5x. The sportsbook side has its own trick: Bovada credits rollover on winning bets as the lesser of the risk or the win, and on losing bets as the risk, so a winning favourite at short odds contributes less turnover than its stake. The UK regulator’s wording for mixed offers is instructive: from 19 January 2026 a licensee may not include more than one product type in one incentive, precisely because a “sports bonus” that forces casino play at 30x is a casino bonus in disguise.
When a term sheet gives a contribution table, recompute the turnover in effective terms: a game counting 10% toward a $7,000 requirement needs $70,000 of bets. If no table is published, assume the operator will apply one at its discretion and ask support in writing before you opt in.
Max bet and expiry: the pace you are forced into
A maximum bet per spin during wagering, combined with an expiry, sets a minimum pace. Suppose a $7,000 requirement, a $5 cap and seven days: that is 1,400 spins at the cap, 200 a day, which is a part-time job on a game with a 4% edge. Lower the cap or shorten the window and the offer becomes impossible for a casual player, which is the design. Roobet’s bonus policy, to give real expiry figures, gives RooSpins and the Bonus Buy feature seven days, and its terms require all bonuses to be claimed within 30 days or forfeited. I do not quote a maximum bet for the offers above because I did not read one on the operators’ pages; treat an unpublished cap as a reason to decline.
Max cashout and progressive unlock: the cap on the upside
The expected-value formula assumes you keep what you win. Two clauses break that assumption. Rainbet’s terms set a maximum withdrawable amount of $50 on welcome promo codes, and any active promotion doubles the deposit wager lock from 1x to 2x. With a $50 ceiling, the distribution of outcomes is truncated at the top: the rare big win that makes a bonus worth anything is confiscated above the cap, and the expected value drops below the simple formula, often to zero or less.
Progressive release does something similar in slow motion. Mega Dice’s offer, per BitDegree, releases a 200% match in 10% tranches each time you wager six times your initial deposit. Full release therefore requires 60x the deposit in turnover, and you only hold the fraction you have unlocked at any moment; stop halfway and you have paid the edge on 30x your deposit for half the bonus. BC.Game’s “up to 360% plus 140% rakeback” over four deposits unlocks progressively in the same way. Convert every release schedule into a single effective multiple before you compare it with anything else.
Variance: why the average is not your result
Expected cost is an average over many sessions. Your one session lives inside a standard deviation, which measures how volatile the bankroll is for a given game; about 68% of outcomes fall within one standard deviation and about 95% within two. A slot with a high top prize and a 4% edge will, more often than not, grind your balance to zero before the turnover is done, and occasionally hand you a win far above the average. Max cashout clauses exist to clip that second case. For games where the final wager differs from the initial one, the Wizard of Odds also publishes an “element of risk”, average loss over total money bet, which is the right figure to use with a turnover requirement because turnover counts total money bet.
What a regulator considers a fair multiple
The UK Gambling Commission decided in 2025 to cap wagering requirements at 10x, rejecting both a ban and lower caps, after finding some licensees applying up to 60x; one operator reported 75% of its offers already between 1x and 10x. The new licence conditions, including the ban on mixed-product incentives, apply from 19 January 2026. The Commission’s evidence said high requirements increase gambling intensity and add complexity, which is a regulator’s way of describing the pace problem above. Crypto operators are not bound by it, and the multiples I have read, 25x to 50x on deposit plus bonus, are two to five times the UK ceiling.
Worked decision: take it or decline it
- Write down the base (B or D+B) and compute turnover.
- Find the edge of the games that count at 100%. If no RTP is shown, use 4% as a working figure and 6% if the terms push you to specific slots.
- Cost = turnover × edge. Compare it with the bonus; compute the break-even return.
- Check max cashout, release schedule, max bet and expiry. Any one of them can turn a positive number negative.
- Check what the promotion does to your deposit: at Rainbet it doubles the wager lock; at Roobet no rakeback accrues while a deposit-bonus requirement is active; at Bovada withdrawing early forfeits bonus and bonus winnings.
- If the result is negative or any term is unpublished, deposit without a code. The rakeback guide shows the alternative most crypto sites offer instead.
The short version
Turnover equals multiple times base; cost equals turnover times edge; a bonus is worth taking only when the bonus exceeds that cost after the cashout cap and the pace constraints. At 25x to 50x on deposit plus bonus and slot edges of 4% or more, the offers I have read fail that test. At the UK’s 10x cap, some pass. Paste the terms into the wagering calculator, read the bonuses category for the offers I have checked, and see the bonus sections of the Bovada and Rainbet reviews for the clauses quoted in full.

Questions people ask
How do I calculate a wagering requirement?
Multiply the stated multiple by its base. 35x on a $100 bonus is $3,500 of bets; 35x on deposit plus bonus with a $100 deposit is $7,000. Then multiply the turnover by the house edge of the games that count to get the expected cost, and compare it with the bonus.
Is a casino bonus ever worth taking?
When the bonus exceeds turnover times house edge after the cashout cap and the pace limits. A 100% match at 30x on the bonus with 2% games is marginally positive on paper; the 25x to 50x on deposit plus bonus offers I have read are negative at any realistic slot edge.
What does 25x deposit plus bonus mean?
You must bet 25 times the sum of your deposit and the bonus before withdrawing. At Bovada a $1,000 crypto deposit earns a $1,250 bonus and commits you to 25 × $2,250 = $56,250 of wagers; the second and third deposit codes carry 50x.
Why do bonus terms exclude blackjack and live dealer games?
Because their house edge is low: liberal-rules blackjack 0.28%, baccarat banker 1.06%. Clearing a requirement on those games would cost the operator less than the bonus. Bovada's crypto casino bonus excludes live dealer games and counts craps at 0%.
What is a maximum cashout on a bonus?
A ceiling on what you can withdraw from bonus play. Rainbet's terms cap welcome-code cashouts at $50. It truncates the rare large win that gives a bonus any value, so the real expected value is lower than the simple formula suggests.
What is the UK cap on wagering requirements?
10x, with mixed-product incentives banned, under licence conditions in force from 19 January 2026. The Gambling Commission found some licensees using up to 60x. Offshore crypto operators are not bound by it.
