Rakeback vs welcome bonus: which one actually pays

Rakeback returns a share of the house edge on every bet with no wagering; a welcome bonus is a lump you pay for with forced turnover. Published rates from 1% to 25% of the edge, the crossover formula, the vaults and claim windows, and a choice by player type.

Rakeback pays a small slice of the house edge back on every bet, with no wagering requirement; a welcome bonus pays a lump once, in exchange for a fixed amount of turnover you must complete first. Which one pays more depends on how much you were going to bet anyway. If you would wager less than the bonus demands, the bonus costs you money in expected terms; if you wager far more, rakeback overtakes it. At a 4% edge and a 5% rakeback rate, it takes $62,500 of betting for rakeback to match a $125 bonus. This guide gives both formulas, the rates operators publish, the gates around them and a decision by player type.

Three different things are sold as rakeback

The word covers at least three mechanisms, and the value differs between them.

  1. A share of the house edge on each bet. The published model at Stake, Shuffle, Rollbit, Cloudbet, Duelbits and BC.Game. Value per bet = stake × house edge × rakeback rate. Stake’s help centre puts it plainly: whether you win or lose, you earn a fixed percentage based on how much you wager.
  2. A percentage of the amount wagered. Roobet’s rewards page describes its Instant Rakeback as “a percentage of your wagered amount”, claimable every 30 minutes. Roobet does not publish the percentage, so the value cannot be computed from outside.
  3. Personalised bonuses that track your losses. Rollbit’s weekly and monthly bonuses are based on recent activity and include lossback; Gamdom says the exact formula for its rewards “is not shared publicly”. These are discretionary, so I treat them as a pleasant surprise, not as a rate.

Only the first kind can be compared with a bonus on paper, so the rest of this guide uses it.

The rates operators publish

All figures below are a percentage of the house edge, not of the stake, read on the operator’s own pages. The last column turns them into dollars on $1,000 wagered at a 4% edge, a typical figure for slots; the Wizard of Odds puts slot edges anywhere from 2% to 15%.

Site Published rate Conditions Per $1,000 at 4% edge
Stake 3.5% of the edge (casino); 3.5% of rake (poker); sports 3.5% at a default 3% edge From Bronze ($10,000 wagered) or via an affiliate code entered within 24 hours of sign-up $1.40
Shuffle 5% of the edge on casino games Not on sports bets (help article dated October 2024) $2.00
Rollbit 5% on all bets Claimable every 30 minutes; half credited now, half over 3 days $2.00
Cloudbet 10% of the edge during the 30-day welcome package Part instant, the rest on a rewards calendar; package capped at $2,500 $4.00
Duelbits 10% instant + 5% daily + 5% weekly + 5% monthly = 25% Sports wagers counted at a 1% edge $10.00
BC.Game Wagered × edge × 1% Same for all VIP levels; locked rakeback must be claimed before new rakeback accrues $0.40
Roobet Not published No rakeback at all while a deposit-bonus wagering requirement is active Unknown

Stake, Shuffle, Rollbit and BC.Game read on 2026-10-07; Cloudbet’s welcome page on 2026-10-07; Duelbits on 2026-10-06; Roobet’s policy on 2026-10-05. The operators’ own worked examples agree with the arithmetic: Stake says 1 BTC wagered at a 2% edge returns 0.0007 BTC, and Shuffle says 1,000 USDT at a 2% edge returns 1 USDT.

The two formulas

Call your total turnover X, the house edge e and the rakeback rate r.

  • Expected loss from playing: X × e. This exists with or without any promotion.
  • Rakeback earned: X × e × r. It grows with every bet and has no requirement attached.
  • Welcome bonus: a lump B, which becomes cash only after a required turnover T. If you would not have bet T anyway, the extra betting costs (T − your planned turnover) × e in expected losses.

Two things follow. Rakeback can never turn play into a profit on average, because the net edge is e × (1 − r) and r is below 100%. And a bonus is only “free” for the part of the turnover you were going to do anyway. The simplified model ignores the chance of busting before you finish, max-bet rules and cashout caps; the casino bonus math guide covers those, and the wagering calculator runs any offer.

The fair comparison: the same player, the same turnover

Most comparisons set “bonus EV” against “rakeback” without fixing how much the player bets. Fix it, and the answer changes with the turnover. The example bonus is Bovada‘s crypto casino welcome offer as published: 125% up to $1,250 with 25x wagering on deposit plus bonus. A $100 deposit brings a $125 bonus and a required turnover of 25 × $225 = $5,625. All rows assume slots at a 4% edge, which count 100% toward Bovada’s requirement.

You planned to wager No promotion Bovada bonus 5% rakeback 25% rakeback
$1,000 −$40 −$100 (you must play to $5,625) −$38 −$30
$5,625 −$225 −$100 −$213.75 −$168.75
$20,000 −$800 −$675 −$760 −$600
$62,500 −$2,500 −$2,375 −$2,375 −$1,875

My arithmetic, expected values only. Read it row by row. A player who would have bet $1,000 is worse off taking the bonus, because it forces $4,625 of extra betting that costs $185 in expected losses to collect $125. A player who bets exactly the required turnover gains the full $125. From there, the bonus stays a fixed $125, while rakeback keeps growing.

The crossover is B ÷ (e × r). For a $125 bonus at a 4% edge:

  • 3.5% rakeback (Stake): about $89,300 of turnover.
  • 5% (Shuffle, Rollbit): $62,500.
  • 10% (Cloudbet’s first 30 days): $31,250.
  • 25% (Duelbits): $12,500.

For the maximum Bovada bonus, $1,250 on a $1,000 deposit, the required turnover is 25 × $2,250 = $56,250, and 5% rakeback would need $625,000 to match it. Big bonuses favour players who bet big anyway; rakeback favours everyone else.

What the table leaves out

The bonus carries restrictions rakeback does not. Bovada’s crypto casino bonus excludes live dealer games and counts craps at 0%; its general terms count table games at 20%, video poker and blackjack at 10%, roulette and baccarat at 5%. Clearing $5,625 on blackjack at 10% means $56,250 of blackjack. Bovada’s terms (§6.8) also say bonus programs are “intended for recreational bettors only” and allow bonuses to be revoked for what it considers abuse. And at Roobet the two do not combine: rakeback stops while a deposit-bonus requirement is active, so the bonus also costs the rakeback you would have earned during T.

The gates: VIP levels, vaults and claim windows

A published rate is only worth what you can collect. These are the conditions I found on the operators’ pages.

  • Stake: rakeback starts at Bronze, which needs $10,000 wagered. The welcome offer is that same rakeback unlocked early through an affiliate code entered within 24 hours of sign-up. Earned rakeback can be claimed at any time from the VIP page.
  • Roobet: instant rakeback never expires, but part of each claim goes into a vault that unlocks three times a day, every 8 hours, and expires 24 hours after unlocking. Rakeboosts add 10% to 20% for set windows and do not stack. Rakeback levels and percentages are not published.
  • Rollbit: half of each rakeback claim goes to a rewards calendar spread over 3 days; calendar rewards expire 24 hours after unlocking if not claimed.
  • BC.Game: the formula updates every minute and has no expiry, but new rakeback only accrues after you claim the locked amount. The monthly deposit bonuses (180% to 360% across four stages) are added to locked rakeback and unlock as you wager on non-PvP games. Reading the two help pages together, I take the unlock rate to be the same wagered × edge × 1%; if so, a $108 bonus (360% of a $30 deposit) at a 4% edge needs $270,000 of turnover to unlock in full. BC.Game does not state this in one sentence, so ask support before you count on it.
  • Gamdom: instant rakeback from a $0.10 minimum with no expiry, up to 15% in the first 6 hours after sign-up; the formula itself is not published.

Optional extras deserve the same scepticism. BC.Game offers “Double or Nothing” on claimed rakeback: twice the reward or nothing. The page I read gives no odds, so it is a bet on your rebate, not part of it.

Rakeback scales with the edge you pay

Because rakeback is a share of the edge, low-edge games earn less of it. At 5%, $1,000 on a 1% edge original returns $0.50; the same $1,000 on a 4% slot returns $2.00. The slot still costs you more: $40 expected loss against $10, before the rebate. Rakeback reduces the edge you pay by a fixed fraction. It never makes a high-edge game the better deal.

Sports are priced differently. Stake pays 3.5% on a default 3% edge, about 0.1% of each sports stake. Duelbits counts sports wagers at a 1% edge, and Shuffle pays no rakeback on sports. On Rollbit, the +15% “Rakeboost” after a calendar claim follows the same logic: its own example is $100 on a 5% edge game returning $0.75. A boost lowers the effective edge for an hour; it does not make the hour profitable.

Which one pays, by player type

You are Better choice Why
Casual, a few hundred dollars of play a month Neither matters much; avoid wagering-heavy bonuses A 25x deposit-plus-bonus requirement forces far more betting than you planned
One deposit, play until it is gone Rakeback or nothing You cannot withdraw a bonus you never clear; rakeback is cash as you go
Regular slot player, thousands a month The bonus once, if its turnover fits your normal play; rakeback after Up to the crossover the lump wins; beyond it the rebate does
High volume on originals or sports Rakeback, and compare rates Bonuses usually count low-edge games at reduced rates; rakeback rates differ by up to 25x between sites
Bonus hunter Read the abuse clauses first Bovada’s recreational-only clause and Roobet’s no-rakeback-during-bonus rule both target you

Two sites have already made the choice for their new players. Stake’s welcome offer is rakeback, not a match; Cloudbet’s welcome package is rakeback plus cash drops for 30 days, and its page sets the package against “wagering requirements that sting” elsewhere. The crypto casinos category lists the reviewed sites, and the slots category those built around the games most bonuses count at 100%.

The short version

Rakeback is a rebate of e × r on everything you bet; a welcome bonus is a fixed lump you pay for with forced turnover. Work out how much you would bet anyway. Below the bonus’s required turnover, skip it; around it, take it; well beyond B ÷ (e × r), rakeback is the better deal, and the published rate matters more than the headline. Check who publishes a rate at all, and when the rewards expire. The bonus math guide and the wagering calculator handle the bonus side in detail.

Questions people ask

What is rakeback at a crypto casino?

A return of part of the house edge on each bet, paid whether you win or lose. Stake pays 3.5% of the edge, Shuffle and Rollbit 5%, Duelbits 25% across four cadences; BC.Game publishes the formula wagered × house edge × 1%. Unlike a deposit bonus it carries no wagering requirement in the models I read.

How is rakeback calculated?

Turnover × house edge × rakeback rate. Stake's own example: 1 BTC wagered at a 2% edge with 3.5% rakeback returns 0.0007 BTC. Shuffle's: 1,000 USDT at a 2% edge with 5% returns 1 USDT. Roobet describes its instant rakeback as a percentage of the amount wagered and does not publish the rate.

Is rakeback better than a welcome bonus?

It depends on how much you bet. If you would wager less than the bonus's required turnover, the bonus costs you money in expected terms. If you would wager far more, rakeback overtakes it at turnover = bonus ÷ (edge × rakeback rate), for example $62,500 for a $125 bonus at a 4% edge and 5% rakeback.

Does rakeback have wagering requirements?

Not in the models I read at Stake, Shuffle, Rollbit, Cloudbet or BC.Game. The catches are elsewhere: Rollbit spreads half of each claim over 3 days, Roobet's vault rewards expire 24 hours after unlocking, BC.Game requires claiming locked rakeback before new rakeback accrues, and Roobet pays none while a deposit-bonus requirement is active.

Is rakeback worth it on low house edge games?

It pays less per dollar there, because it is a share of the edge: at 5% rakeback, $1,000 on a 1% edge game returns $0.50 against $2.00 on a 4% slot. The low-edge game is still cheaper to play, since its expected loss is $10 against $40.
